Congress may be poised to provide genetically engineered crops immunity from federal environmental laws and override government reviews for approving them. Spurred by the biotechnology industry, lawmakers have inserted language into the Agriculture Appropriation for 2013, and in the Farm Bill Re-authorization, that would make it easier to plant transgenic crops. A broad coalition of food businesses, farmers, environmental and consumer groups are expressing alarm about the potential impact on the nation's food supply and environment, if passed into law.
