Over the weekend Residents in the Central Valley city of Madera, Sunday, protested a proposed gravel quarry they say threatens their groundwater source, pollutes the air and will cause serious traffic problems at a major rural intersection. The Austin Quarry project is proposed by the Vulcan Materials Company, the nation’s largest producer of sand, gravel and aggregate rock. The protest was organized by the Madera Oversight Coalition, an environmental group advocating responsible growth. The Madera County Planning Commission approved the quarry in July. Madera’s Board of Supervisors will make the final decision next Monday. Vic Bedoian reports from Fresno.
