Wave of Hunger Strikes Hits National Immigration Detention Facilities

On Friday, twenty detainees at the Adelanto Immigration Detention Facility in Southern California went on hunger strike. The strikers are asking for better medical and dental care, better food, and to be treated with respect from Adelanto's owners, GEO Group. The Adelanto Facility has been criticized for poor conditions before – in 2012, the government ruled that due to improper medical care, a detainee died from a preventable illness. This is the fourth hunger strike by an immigrant detention facility to occur in the U.S. in the last several weeks.
