Oakland School District invites charter school proposals



The Oakland Unified School District has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to overhaul what they call 5 “low performing” city schools. Charter school advocates as well as teacher and community groups are invited to submit proposals. The five schools are McClymonds, Fremont and Castlemont High Schools, Frick Middle School, and Brookfield Elementary School.
The district’s action has spurred fierce opposition from Oakland Education Association and from many teachers, parents and community members who fear the action is the opening volley in a broad effort by the district to convert public schools to charter schools.
