Long Time Social and Civil Rights Activist Maudelle Shirek Passes Away at 101

Long time social and civil rights activist, Maudelle Shirek passed away Thursday night in Hospice in Vallejo, at the age of 101. A former Berkeley City Council member and Vice Mayor, Shirek was well known in the community as a tireless activist and a mover and shaker even at her late age. Friends say she met and kept the company of prominent political figures, writers, and poets, such as Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro, Maya Angelou. and Langston Hughes, and infused the local political climate with her global awareness.
