Evicted renters from neighborhoods across San Francisco gathered in the Castro District today to urge local and state officials to take action against evictions resulting from the controversial Ellis Act - a state law that enables landlords to bypass rent control laws and evict tenants. Protesters are directing their frustration at District 8 Supervisor Scott Weiner who is introducing new legislation they say could increase the number of such evictions, but Weiner insists his legislation in protecting tenants.
