This week Governor Jerry Brown signed into law legislation that makes access to clean, affordable water a human right. The new law requires state agencies to consider the use of water for human consumption and sanitation in all their decision-making. The bill, AB 685 was sponsored by Assemblyman Mike Eng of Alhambra, and supported by a state-wide coalition that included environmental justice organizations, Native Americans and faith-based groups.
