Oscar Grant Protest Set For Sunday On 3rd Anniversary Of Death

Family members and supporters of Oscar Grant will mark the third anniversary of the killing of the unarmed BART passenger this Sunday on New Year's Day. Former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle shot Grant as he lay face down on the platform of the Fruitvale BART station on early New Year's morning 2009. Mehserle was released in June after serving 11 months of a two year sentence for involuntary manslaughter. On Sunday, New Year's Day, organizers of the Oscar Grant Committee will march and rally. Speakers will include Oscar Grant family members, Kenneth Carrethers, who unsuccessfully sued Mehserle after Carrethers said he was wrongfully beaten by Mehserle and other BART officers six weeks before Grant's death, and other San Francisco Bay Area family members of those killed by local police officers. Details of Sunday's event:

12:30 Gather in Frank Ogawa Plaza, renamed Oscar Grant Plaza, 14th and Broadway in Oakland
1:00 March to Fruitvale BART Station
3:00 Rally at Fruitvale BART Station
