Immigrant rights groups in California are praising new state-wide policies regarding vehicle impounds at sobriety checkpoints that go into effect January 1. Undocumented immigrants stand the most to gain, but any unlicensed driver caught at a checkpoint will be given the opportunity to contact the licensed owner to retrieve the car before it gets impounded. In Los Angeles, city leaders are preparing to extend that policy to all police actions, giving unlicensed drivers the chance to avoid vehicle impounds.
