Thousands of NorCal Nurses Stage One Day Strike

The California Nurses Association says over 23,000 nurses walked off the job in northern and central California today. Nurses at hospitals in the Sutter chain and at Children’s Hospital of Oakland are striking over massive takebacks they say hospital management is demanding. Nurses at the Kaiser chain walked out in solidarity with striking members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers, and joined the striking Sutter nurses on picket lines. The unions are billing it as one of the largest strike actions by nurses ever, with strikes hitting over 34 different facilities. Sutter has responded by locking out its nurses for five days. Brian Edwards-Tiekert files this report.
