Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck met with members of the Pico-Aliso [ah LEE so] and Boyle Heights community this week to discuss the LAPD’s role in the federal Secured Communities program. Beck pledged to uphold Special Order 40, the police mandate that prohibits officers from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status. But some community activists say the LAPD’s promise does little to build trust among Latino immigrants who are already wary of law enforcement.
