California Unemployment Worsened In July

The latest jobs data show unemployment worsened slightly in California in the month of July, rising two tenths of a point to 12%. That number does not count discouraged workers who've stopped looking for jobs, nor the underemployed--those who are working part-time, even though they want to work more. The uptick in unemployment comes despite the fact that California added 4,500 payroll jobs – job growth has barely kept pace with growth in California's workforce. The pain isn't being felt evenly: San Francisco's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.8 percent. The Los Angeles area unemployment rate rose slightly to 12.4 percent; Imperial County, east of San Diego, saw its unemployment rate rise more than a percentage point to 30.8 percent.
