The union representing thousands of Southern California grocery workers is holding a strike-authorization vote today. The United Food and Commercial Workers say there has been no progress in contract talks with management companies. If workers authorize a strike, it does not necessarily mean a walkout would occur but it would give the union the power to call for a strike if negotiations eventually break down. Workers at the three unionized supermarket chains remember the 2003-2004 UFCW strike. Many say they’re not ready for another five month strike but are prepared to defend their jobs and benefits.
