Organic Farmers Sue Monsanto

A group of sixty organic farmers, seed companies and agricultural businesses is suing Monsanto. It's a preemptive legal action to protect themselves from patent infringement lawsuits, if they were to be contaminated by Monsanto's genetically modified seeds. In 1998, Monsanto sued Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser, in a notable case of his canola crop. Eventually the Supreme Court ruled five-to-four that Monsanto's patent was valid and infringement did occur. However, those court cases did not consider the legality of who should be responsible when transgenic contamination takes place. Vic Bedoian reports.
