Death Penalty Initiative Before State Supreme Court

The state Supreme Court could decide soon whether California will resume executions that have been on hold for more than a decade. The high court held a hearing Tuesday morning on a voter-passed ballot measure aimed at speeding up the state’s death penalty process. Opponents say the initiative is unconstitutional, would create havoc in the courts, and raises the specter of executing innocent people who cannot meet tighter appeal deadlines.
