The True Cost of Incarceration on Families

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Forward Together, and Research Action Design, in collaboration with twenty other organizations across the country, released a report documenting the effect of incarceration on families. Some of their findings included that due to the loss of income, one in five survey participants were unable to afford housing. Also, families paid, on average, $13,000 to cover court costs, the same as an annual year of income for low-income families.
