State lawmakers have taken their first formal look at Governor Jerry Brown’s state budget proposal. The Assembly Budget Committee held its first budget hearing at the State Capitol Thursday, with several Democrats suggesting the state should consider spending more on restoring past cuts to health and welfare safety net programs for people hurt most by the recent recession.
