The Proposition 8 lawsuit, Hollingsworth v Perry, is by any definition a landmark case, one that brings detailed court history, arguments, and controversial issues to the highest court in the land. But the outcome is anything but certain, and in the end, it could fall far short of what either supporters or opponents of same-sex marriage want. The Supreme Court decision could range from upholding the ban on same sex marriage, to overturning it in California only, or allowing same sex marriage in about 8 states, or deciding all 50 states must allow same sex couples to marry.
