Dept. of Energy May Sell Scrap Metal from Nuclear Sites

The Department of Energy is proposing that some scrap metal from federal nuclear facilities be sold to commercial recycling companies to reduce the amount of landfill waste. The National Nuclear Security Administration says the materials would be tested for radiation levels and released for recycling only if the scrap metal is deemed safe by federal standards.
But anti-nuclear activists and researchers the plan poses serious human health and environmental risks.
