Tax Initiatives Compete for Support

Some advocates for schools, health care and social services have long advocated for tax increases to fund vital programs, but this year they face competing measures on the ballot to hike taxes, with different effects on education and other programs. Many fear the prospect of competing measures bringing each other down to defeat at the polls. Supporters and Opponents of Proposition 30 and Prop 38 laid out their views at a legislative hearing at the State Capitol. Christopher Martinez files this report from Sacramento.
