Lawmakers Question Hospital Charity Care

State lawmakers are looking at the tax exemptions that nonprofit hospitals get, in the wake of a State Auditors report that says there’s not enough information about how much community benefit the nonprofit hospitals provide. Another report by the California Nurses Association says nonprofit hospitals get a two billion dollar wind-fall from their tax exemption, while accumulating huge profits and skimping on charity care.
