State Budget Votes, Boycott

A Democratic budget package easily sailed out of a state senate budget hearing on the way to final votes Friday, but Republican lawmakers boycotted the hearing, and Governor Jerry Brown’s support is still in question. The Democrats want to ratchet down Governor Brown’s proposed cuts to the CalWORKS welfare program, home care for the aged, blind and disabled, and other safety net programs for the poor and vulnerable. Republican lawmakers say Democrats are pushing through their budget plan without enough time for public review. Christopher Martinez files this report from the state capitol.
