Occupy Oakland General Strike Actions Set For Today

Occupy Oakland organizers are calling on supporters to converge at Broadway and 14th at three different times today: 9 am, noon and 5 pm. The 5 pm demonstration will march on the port of Oakland, hoping to shut down business there before the 7 pm shift change.

Unions and other groups are holding feeder marches and actions. Here's a partial list:

*The group Causa Justa/Just Cause wil be marching on major banks leaving from near the intersection of 14th and Broadway at 9 am and noon.

* The Oakland Education Association says some teachers will march to Laney College and join faculty in an 11 am march to City Hall for a noontime rally. At 4 pm the O.E.A. will join other teachers unions in a brief rally at the State Building, 1515 Clay St, then march to Frank Ogawa Plaza for the 5 p.m. rally.

*At Noon, children and families will meet outside the Oakland Public Library Main Branch at 125 14th St. for a march to City Hall. There will be a second such meeting outside the library at 3 pm with a 4:30 march to City Hall.

*A group of Richmond teachers plans to walk 10 miles along San Pablo Avenue to join the Occupy Oakland rally. They'll meet at 8 am at San Pablo and McDonald Avenue and march at 8:30. Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin will be there to see them off.

*The Alameda Labor Council will participate in the bank march and action at noontime and the 5 p.m. mass mobilization. Unions will stage an action at the Mercedes Benz dealership at noon. The Labor Council says it will host a cook out for the entire Occupy Oakland community in Frank Ogawa Plaza from 4:30 to 8 p.m.

*Jewish Voice for Peace will gather at 9, noon and 5 at the fountain at 16th and San Pablo Avenue and take part in the marches.

*The Disability Action Brigade will convene at the north side of City Hall at 2 p.m. and will march a short distance to hold an occupation and teach in regarding budget cuts. Beginning at 5:30 there will be wheelchair accessible shuttles to the Port of Oakland.

*An anti-capitalist march will meet at 2pm at the intersection of Telegraph & Broadway

*The Feminist & Queer bloc against capitalism will meet at 4:30 at 14th & Broadway.

*Occupy San Francisco will leave from its Justin Herman Plaza encampment to travel to Oakland after 4 pm.
