Relatives of Slain Three Year Old Oppose Youth Curfew

Community organizers joined cousins of three-year-old Carlos Fernandez Nava on the east Oakland sidewalk where the child was killed last week in a drive by shooting. Against a backdrop of dozens of stuffed animals left where the death occurred, speakers called for jobs and restorative justice programs and blasted suggestions by Councilmembers Ignacio de la Fuente and Larry Reid that the solution to the violence is to expand the north Oakland and Fruitvale gang injunction areas to include east and west Oakland and to institute citywide curfews. Judith Scherr reports.
