Southern California labor groups today pledged to support grocery workers in the event of a strike. Earlier this year, some 62,000 super market workers employed by Ralph’s, Vons and Albertsons across the southland gave their union authorization to strike. They’ve been without a contract for four months. Several dozen labor groups met at the AFL-CIO offices in downtown LA this afternoon to pledge $100,000 as part of a Hardship Fund to help workers in the event of a strike. Union leaders celebrated the workers’ courage to walk off the job despite painful memories of a 2003-2004 work stoppage which caused financial hardship. Pacifica’s Ernesto Arce has more from Los Angeles.
