Advocates Say Sentencing Reform Saves Money

One of the cornerstones of Governor Jerry Brown's budget plan is a proposal t oshift low-level offenders from prisons to jails. It's a change that could cut the state prison population by almost 25 per cent. But a coalition of sentencing reform advocates is calling for other changes to reduce sentences for offenses like drug possession and vandalism,saying the state and counties could save hundreds of millions of dollars.
