Los Angeles officials unveiled plans this week to renovate a controversial mural by famed Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros. In 1932, Siqueiros was commissioned to create an Olvera Street mural which he dubbed America Tropical. It featured an indigenous American crucified to a cross with an eagle overhead prepared to devour him. The work was so controversial that city officials had it immediately whitewashed.
The city and the Getty Conservation contributed $9 million total to its renovation. Siqueiros’ work of art, including a viewing platform, are scheduled for completion in 2012. Pacifica’s Ernesto Arce has more from Los Angeles.
