L.A. Teachers Union vs ACLU in Lawsuit Over Layoffs

The Los Angeles teacher’s union is criticizing a proposed settlement in the "Reed" lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the Los Angeles Unified School District. The United Teachers of Los Angeles says the ACLU’s demands will do little to improve education at low-performing schools. It says the settlement undermines seniority rules guaranteed by the union contract and state law.
In the Reed lawsuit, the ACLU says massive teacher layoffs at three district schools deprived thousands of students their legal right to an education.
Today, a Superior Court judge in Los Angeles is hearing final arguments in the case. The UTLA says a decision in favor of the ACLU’s proposal could potentially cause widespread instability. Pacifica’s Ernesto Arce has more from Los Angeles.
