California has made a series of moves to protect endangered fish populations and take control of its own water future. The state’s major environmental agencies have announced plans to manage the State Water Project in a way that provides water for habitat needs and the working landscape. The state also announced that it’s suing the federal government over the recently issued biological rules issued by the Trump Administration. Those rules seek to maximize federal water project exports to farms and cities to the south. But state agencies say the federal water operation are not scientifically adequate to protect species like Salmon and Delta Smelt species, that are on the brink of extinction.
