The Trump Administration plans to dramatically increase water diversions from the Bay Delta to San Joaquin Valley farmers. It’s part of a new plan to operate California’s federal waters known as the Central Valley Project. Under the guidance of a new set of biological opinions, Bay Delta water deliveries will be maximized while protection for endangered species, such as Delta Smelt and Chinook Salmon, will be relaxed. Environmental advocates and some Democratic politicians attacked the move as a plan for extinction. They’re waiting now to see how state officials will respond to the new measures.
